Independent Reading Book Choice (Due Friday, 9/5)

It is time to choose your Independent Reading book for the 1st quarter. The requirements for each quarter are that you read at least 400 pages of a selection which challenges you, complete all check-ins, and present a final project at the end of the quarter to demonstrate understanding of your book. DO NOT CHOOSE A BOOK YOU HAVE ALREADY READ.

Please complete this discussion post by giving me the following information:

-Title
-Author
-# of pages (Find this info on Amazon.com if you have a kindle)
-A brief summary of your book
-Why did you choose this book?

Remember, each response must be at least 50 words and should cover all questions posed. It is due by midnight this Friday. I believe I have spoken with all of you who had issues over the summer posting to the site. Remember to check the following:

1. Log into your Google account before posting.
2. Be sure you are using Safari or Chrome. Firefox has issues.
3. Make sure your permissions are open so you have access to the site.
4. Copy your response before you hit submit in case it is deleted.

Avoid trying to post from your phone, iPod, or iPad. If you are still having issues with your home computer, you may use a computer in my room after you finish your bell ringer.

Thanks!

  1. The book I have chosen to read is "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens. It is 490 pages long and one of the great literary classics.
Books do not become classics based on a single opinion or by merely being old. "Great Expectations" follows the life of a young boy who is apprenticed in an abhorrent forge. The boy, Pip, is determined to become a decorous gentlemen. Later in life he meets several fascinating characters including an enchanting, haughty young woman, an unnerving convict, and an eccentric old woman. This story features conflict and guilt and portrays an novel, yet original view on life.
These views and aspects of classical literature are what fascinate me and compel me to read them. I've wanted to read this particular book for a long time and have decided to do so now. Dickens is one of my favorite authors and it's been said that this is his greatest work. I look forward to deciding that for myself and learning and experiencing the captivating sensation of reading Dickens' "Great Expectations".

  2. I have chosen to read, "The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid" by Rick Riordan. It is 514 pages long. A sister and brother loose their father on Christmas Eve, due to a accident that happened in London. They find out that their dad summoned five great Egypt Gods. They start, little by little, finding out who they REALLY are.
I chose this book, because, first, it was recommended to me. Second, I am beginning to like fiction books, especially ones that have foreign countries included. I feel like I will like this book because it has magic, kids looking for who they really are. That applies to me because I'm just a teenager like the two main characters in the book, and I'm also searching for who I really am. This book will definitely meet my expectations!

  3. For the Independent Reading assignment, I have decided to read the novel "Saboteur" by Dean Hughes. It contains 401 pages of love and war.
The story follows Andy Gledhill, a young paratrooper and member of the LDS church, and his journey through World War ll. His French background has scored him a chance to work undercover in France. Away from the frenzy of war is his small hometown in Utah, where his family, friends, and serious girlfriend lives. As he is torn between serving his country and marrying his true love, he decides to do what's right, and fight for his freedom... even if it means doing things against his religion. I am very excited to have found this novel, and learn from the messages in it!

  6. For my Independent Reading assignment, I have decided to read is "The Privilege of Youth" by: Dave Pelzer. It is 380 pages. I will be reading another book that has over 200 pages to get my full 400 but I will be doing this one for my project. There is a young boy, he has endured bullies and taunting throughout his childhood. He writes in his journal about the simple pleasures of his neighborhood and exploring the adventures in it as well instead of focusing on the stuff that happens to him at home. He is abused and learns how to cope throughout the book. I wanted to read this book because it has been recommended to be non-stop and its got an appealing title as well.

  10. The title of my 1st quarter Independent Reading book is The Swarm, written by Frank Schatzing. It is 881 pages long.
This book is about unexpected, catastrophic problems involving the ocean, such as whales sinking ships and The North Sea shelf collapsing, killing thousands of people. There are even poisonous, eyeless crabs polluting the water supply. It is as if the ocean is starting a violent revolution against mankind. This is damaging to the Earth’s delicate ecology. Ultimately, it threatens the existence of the human race.
First of all, I chose this book because the book next to it had caught my eye. However, it was more than 1000 pages long. The Swarm is another book by the same author as the previous book. It interests me because it is deeply entwined with science. Science has recently become very interesting to me, and I hope that this book will challenge and intrigue me at the same time.

  12. The book I have chosen for my Independent Reading Project is, "False Memory" by Dan Krokos. This book is 327 pages but I will also be reading the second book of the series "False Sight" to cover for the full 400 pages. "False Memory" is about a girl named Miranda North who wakes up alone on a park bench with no memory. In her panic, she releases a mysterious energy that incites pure terror. Left with no choice, Miranda discovers that she was trained to be a weapon and is part of an elite force of genetically altered teens who possess flawless combat skills and powers strong enough to destroy a city.
I chose this book because my friend had strongly recommended it to me. Also after reading the summary it sounded pretty interesting.

  13. The book I have chosen for the IR assignment is called 19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult. It has 455 pages. I haven't gotten very far in the book yet, so the best summary I can give you is to restate and shorten the summary of the book. In short, it's about this boy, Peter, who has been bullied all throughout school, and one day in his senior year, he brings guns to school and commits a school shooting. His childhood best friend, Josie, is the daughter of the judge who is assigned to rule over Peter's case. Judge Cromier has to choose between making sure there is fair judgment, and the law is followed, or to help and connect to her already distant daughter. I chose this book, mainly because it is all about the split second and longterm choices we all make. It's about how the way people treat each other actually does have an affect, and someone can only take so much before they break. It's also about aknowledging that someone loves the villain too. I know it's going to be challenging for me, because it talks a lot about hating yourself, and suicide, and being lost, confused, and hurt. I think that in some ways, I'll be able to relate. But I also think that some of my views and opinions will change after I read this. I am so excited to finish this book! I have a feeling it might be one of my favorites!

  14. I chose the book "The Help". The author's name is Kathryn Stockett. The book has 444 pages.
This book is about three women in the 1960's. Their names are Aibileen, Skeeter, and Minny. Two of these women are African American maids for two different families. They have chosen to do something extremely illegal. They all chose to do this extremely dangerous task that puts themselves and others at risk because they have been "pushed to the limit" by their town.
I chose this book because the cover caught my eye (probably because it is bright yellow) and it looked big enough to be at least 400 pages. Although, after I read the blurb I was more interested about this book.

  15. The book that I have chosen to read is "The Work and the Glory: A Pillar of Light" by Gerald N. Lund and is 437 pages. This book is a historical novel.
This book is about a family by the name of Steed that move from Vermont to Palmyra in about 1826. There in Palmyra, they meet a young man named Joseph Smith, who claims to have seen God and His son, Jesus Christ. The Steeds are confused of what to believe because most of the town think that he's a fraud, yet Joseph is a kind, hard-working man.
As some members of the Steed family believe Joseph Smith and the church he has restored, other members of the family don't believe, and this causes a great up-roaring between the family.
I chose this book because I have always been interested in reading it, but have never been able find the book to read it. Years ago, I watched the movie and have been very interested in the book ever since I found out that it was a book!

  39. The book I have chosen for my independent reading assignment this quarter is "Since You've Been Gone" by Morgan Matson. The book is 465 pages which may seem like a mouthful but I enjoyed every single page. The basic summary of the story is that just as summer begins, Emily finds that her best friend, Sloane, has magically disappeared. There are no notes, no calls, or no texts. But Sloane did leave one thing, a random to-do list with 13 bizarre tasks that Emily would never normally try. But she tries to complete it in attempt to lead her to Sloane, even if it means getting help from a handsome Frank Porter, and having to step out of her comfort zone. The reason I chose to read this book is because over the years I've read a lot of cute girly romances (and yes, this one has tons of romance in it too) but the idea of her missing friend and the hopeful list intrigued me very much. I want to see if the list will indeed lead her to Sloane and what she will learn along the way.

  42. The title of my book is Peter and the Starcatchers, by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. There are 451 pages in this book. I believe that this book is about an orphan, Peter, and his friends, who were placed on a boat called the Never Land. They had no idea why, until the first command of the boat told them. On his journey, he meets a girl. She is mysterious in ways, yet kind. One night Peter sneaks out to find some food. He comes to a dark room, and sees a flying rat above a chest he had seen loaded on the ship earlier. The whole ship saves to sailors from drowning, and learn that the fastest ship, the Wasp, is going to be attacked. Questions like, “Who will survive?” and “What will happen to the survivors?” run through my head. I chose this book because it seemed interesting and different. I have never heard of a book, let alone series, that tells another version of Peter Pan. It sounds fun and like a good read. It also might be a little challenging in some parts.

Then to make things more complicated, Leo starts firing on the camp which provokes the romans. Annabeth, Percy, Jason, Piper, Leo, Hazel, and Frank make it out of the camp, but Jason is unconscious. 46. For my book I chose to read “The Rent Collector,” by Camron Wright. This book is 264 pages long, and I plan to read another book to get my total of 400 pages.
This book takes place at Stung Meanchey, the largest municipal waste dump in all of Cambodia. The people there make their living by reselling trash they pick through every day. Every month “the rent collector” comes to the living space of Sang Ly, Ki Lim, and their son Nisay demanding their rent for the month. Nisay has been very sick for a long time, and none of the medicine they get lasts long enough for him to overcome his sickness. The family is running out of money to pay the doctors. When their life starts to feel as if it is falling apart, ‘’the rent collector’’ may be the one to come to their rescue.

  47. I have chosen to read "Matched" by Ally Condie for my independent reading book. It only has 366 pages, but I will be starting the second book of the series (Crossed by Ally Condie) to get all my pages in.

This book is about a fifteen year old girl, named Cassia Reyes, that lives in the perfect society. She has gone all her life accepting all the society's rules and beliefs. Sometime after their fifteenth birthday, all the citizens get matched with another citizen to eventually get contracted at age 21. After getting matched, each matchee gets a microcard about the others life. When Cassia's microcard shows not only her matches face, but another boy's face as well, she starts to wonder if the society really isn't as perfect as everyone thinks. The more that the Society's Matching Officials start to watch and be involved in Cassia's life, the more it makes her wonder about the way the Society works and what it was like before. To want to know such things is very dangerous in a utopia.

I chose this book because it sounded interesting and everyone I know that has read it has loved it.

When he tries to intervine he considered a traitor and is forced to mine for diamonds. His only escape is to fly away. He spends his free time sketching machines to escape. I chose this book because I wanted to read a different book but it didn’t have enough pages and I didn’t want to read two books. But I have also read a few pages into this book earlier so I was kind of interested in it.

  53. My book is the Grey Griffins: The Paragon Prison written by Derek Benz and J.S. Lewis, with 350 pages. (I read 50 more from another book) The book follows Max, Ernie, Harley, and Natalia as they go on a journey to defeat the evil man Von Strife and his clockwork army. With the help of the Templar, they make it to his Paragon Engine. But while there, they get sent through to a parallel universe where they will have to defeat Von Strife, but not look suspicious. I chose this book because as I read the first page I was immediately hooked in. It turned out to be an awesome book!

  54. My book is Matched by Ally Condie. It has 366 pages, but I will read Crossed (the second book in the series) to get all 400 pages read.
This book is about a 17 year old girl named Cassia Reyes. Cassia and her family live in what is envisioned as the perfect Society. In the Society each citizen is Matched to their future spouse in a special ceremony. Cassia is matched to her best friend Xander Carrow. When they are matched they are given a microcard with information about their match on it. When Cassia views her microcard she sees Xander's face pop onto the screen and then she sees the face of Ky Markham. She soon realizes that she loves Ky too. Even though she has feelings for both Xander and Ky she must pick one to be with.
I chose this book because I had heard great things about it. I also wanted to try a new genre of writing to see how I liked it. The final over the edge reason was because I read the book summary on the back and I was immediately hooked and wanted to know how it ended.
