Independent Reading Project (POST Due 3/6/15)

Independent Reading Project

Here are your options for your independent reading (AR) project. Remember, the main purpose of this assignment is for me to assess your reading comprehension. However, I also want you to be creative and have fun with this! Feel free to email me with suggestions not listed here. Please keep in mind that ALL written projects must be typed, along with your summary.

1. Write a poem about your book. There aren't really any rules with this. The poem may illustrate one of the many themes of the book or address one of the conflicts. It might paint a picture of one of the characters or contrast oppositions in the book. It doesn't need to fit any particular structure and it most definitely doesn't need to rhyme. Just start writing and see what you create! Of course, the poem should be long enough to show reading comprehension. Please type this.

2. Create a children's book. You will basically rewrite your book in simpler terms and use illustrations to help. Feel free to use metaphors and other forms of imagery to tell your story. You must have a minimum of 5 pages to complete the entire plot diagram (introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution).

3. Rewrite the ending. You may choose to rewrite the ending of your book. You will need to include enough information in this final chapter to show that you have read and understand the book and to give the reader enough information to understand your new conclusion. Please type this.

4. Illustrate your novel. Choose a character, a chapter, or a theme from the book to portray through art. You may complete a drawing, painting, sculpture, or any other form of art. Remember, I must be able to assess your reading comprehension through your project. Type up a brief summary of your book.

5. Create a movie trailer or a scene from the book. This can be done with real footage or with animations. Remember, I must be able to assess your reading comprehension through your project.

Remember, you may not complete the same project as last quarter. Also, be sure to put lots of effort into this. Be creative and have fun!

Prompt: What project have you decided to complete? Tell me all about it. Remember, the idea is to think of a new and creative project.

Mrs. K

  1. My project for this AR book will be art. I'm not really the artistic type, but I've figured out a way to bring words and character development together to create something that really expresses a specific individual throughout this story. It's definitely going to be a challenge for me as it is art which is rather out of my comfort zone. It will analyze specific characteristics of my favorite character and will gradually portray her development.

  2. For my project I'm doing a scrap book/photo album. I'm doing it on the book "The Princess Bride" and will probably use a lot of pictures from the movie. I would like to have captions that you would find on a social media website, but the annoying kind of comment. I'm planning on filling the captions with hashtags and mainstream sort of words.

  3. For my project I am going to do a poem. I am choosing this because I haven't done a poem for an AR project and it's also something I normally wouldn't want to do and I kind of want to try it. I don't really like to write poems or even read them so I think it would be interesting to see a poem I had written. Also the book i am reading has many topics and characters that I could base my poems theme on and would also be a challenge on finding the right words to describe the book

  4. For my AR project, I will most likely do some sort of video. I enjoy creating projects on the computer, and there are many ways I could create a video that would be challenging and new to me. My book is very action-packed, and will therefore work well when considering intensity and drama. I also have not done any AR project on the computer yet, so it will be different from my other two projects.

  5. I read "The 5th Wave" by Rick Yancey. This amazingly written book is about an alien invasion. Instead of attacking and killing the human society with violence, the aliens use "waves" of different processes and approaches of not just killing the humans physically, but also mentally.
To portray these mind-blowing thoughts, I've decided to use an art project. The project will do well in presenting all of the five different waves that the aliens use. I'm very excited for this project.

  6. For my AR project this quarter I am going to do an art project. I am not the most creative person and I don't really have a love for drawing or painting. Because of this there aren't very many times that I have actually expressed something through art. I think that this could be a different experience for me and that it will help me to better explain my book. I'm very excited to see how my project turns out!

  7. I read the book "Lemon Tart" by Josi S. Kilpack. This is the first book in it's series. This book represents a mid-age women who decides to take manners into her own hands and solves a mystery on her own.
The project that I am doing is, making a dessert and sharing it with the class. With a surprise!

  10. For my project I am going to make a website. The website will have the summery of the book. It will be based off of the fundraising that the characters do for Jessica (the main character). On the website there will be a little about Jessica and why her friends did a fundraiser for her.

  11. I read the book "The Maze Runner". For my AR project, I think I'll do a little art. Throughout the book, one of the biggest trials that the characters had to face was a creature called a Griever. These killing machines were a mix of a blob and a death machine. I have chosen to make a 3d model of this beast. -Max Catten

  12. I read the book "Catching Fire." For my AR project I will be rewriting the ending. I want to do this because I have not done this for a project yet. I want to try something new and I think it would be a lot of fun. Also, I love writing so this will be something fun for me to do. I am very excited to rewrite the ending and present my project, I really love the book.

  13. I read "The Maze Runner" by James Dashner. For my AR project I'll do a Prezi again, but it'll be more like a book in a bag. I'll have pictures that represent certain aspects of the book (i.e. characters, settings, conflicts), and present the pictures and explanations using Prezi.

  14. I read the Drizzt series streams of silver by R.A Salvatore and for my AR project I am going to do a short film that will blend mine and Joseph's book together that will blow Mrs. K away.

  15. For my AR project I am going to make a sculpture about my book out of play dough. My book was “The Red Pyramid,” by Rick Riordan. I am going to bring a magician bag, with what would regularly be inside a magician’s bag. This is not a street magician but an Egyptian conjurer of spells. In the bag will be an array of items that are used in a book.

  16. For my AR book this quarter I read "Water for Elephants" written by Sara Gruen. This book is about an old, sullen man living in a rest home who is having flashbacks about his life when he was younger and joined the circus. I plan to present a painted picture of a scene or of a favorite character from the book.

  17. For my AR project I will be doing a movie trailer o. The book This Shattered World. It is the Sequel to my previous AR book these broken stars. The trailer will feature my younger siblings, and I believe that although it will be humorous it will still correctly portray the book.

  18. I read Five Kingdoms by Brandon Mull and I'm not really sure what I want to do for my project. It will have to be some kind of art project because I hate poetry and have already made my book into a children's book and done a movie trailer. I might try illustrating a character or something like that.

  19. My AR project will be on the book "Matched" by Ally Condie. I have decided that my project will be like an art project. I have chosen to use three items that symbolize things in the book. I'm going to recreate how I picture they would be. I will present it and have a written summary.

  20. I read the book "Emma" by Jane Austen. I have decided to do an art project. I want to do a type of collage. Through this collage I will be able to portray what I think is an important concept in this book.

  21. I read the book "Steelheart" by Brandon Sanderson. For my project I have decided to do a poem on the main character. I have decided to do this because I haven't done a poem for an AR project and it's also something I wouldn't normally want to do and I kind of want to try it. And I also think it would challenge me.

  22. I read "The Limit" by Kristen Landon. It is about a kid named Matt that was kidnapped by the government to pay off his family's debt. I think that I am going to do a trailer for my AR project.

  23. For my AR project, I have decided to do a mixed medium painting....metaphor...type thing. It will turn out super cool, girl-scouts honor! I read "Looking For Alaska" by John Green. The main character of the book is a boy who is head-over-heals for this girl, Alaska. But throughout the story, Alaska goes through some pretty life changing events. In my painting, I'm going to use objects as a metaphor for her life, and major things that happen in the story. Not bragging, but I'm pretty good at doing art and things like that, so I have full confidence that this project will be very meaningful and beautiful. I can't wait to show you!

  24. Abbie Johnson,
The book I have chosen to read is, "shooter," by {Dahlia West}. Now I don't really know if this is going to work, but I'm going to give it a try. For my project I am going to show how the main character has changed from the beginning of the book to the end of the book. To do so I will show it through clothing, attitude, and physical perspectives. Along with doing that I will type a summary of the book.

  25. For my AR assessment I read the book "Beyonoders " by brandon mull. Tom and I are going to do a film that will combine the best of both worlds by combining both of our books together. It is going going to be a fun film thats suppose to blow mrs. K away.

  26. For my AR book I read the book " The Oracle Betrayed" by Catherine Fisher. I have decided to do an art project. I am not very good at art so I think that this project will challenge me. I haven't done an art project yet so I'm hoping that it will be a different experience as my other projects that I did last quarter.

  27. For my AR assessment I read the book "Looking for Alaska" by John Green and for my project I'm going to be doing a poem! Yes, I know that I did one of those in the first quarter but I still believe that it will be a challenge. First off, I'll be writing in a different style this time around, (no rhyming) and I won't be basing it off the of the point of view of the main character, Pudge. Instead I'm going to write from Alaska, the girl Pudge starts to fall for. She seems like a good character to do a poem on because she seems to have a few skeletons in her closet and that will hopefully make it all the more interesting!

  28. For my AR project I am going to re write the ending to my book. The book I read was The lord of the rings Return of the King. I'm not really into alternate endings but I have a pretty good idea for this book and how im going to end if for real this time ;)

  29. For my AR project I have chosen to create a collage of scenes from my book, "If I Stay," by Gayla Forman. Time is a very important aspect of my book so I want to create a timeline showing the different events that take place in this short period of time. I have an idea in mind of a way to do my collage that is very different and I hope that it will work. I know this project will be challenging since I am not very artistic but I think that it will be a lot of fun to see how it turns out.

  30. For my AR project I'm doing an art project to recreate a scene from my book. I've been reading Chris Kyles autobiography. I want to create a scene showing the emotion Chris Kyle felt in the book. I'm still trying to decide if I want to do a 3D model of the scene or a painting to show the emotions felt.

  31. For my AR project, I typed up a paper, and have a project with it as well. Since my book talks about forgiveness, which means that my book is religious. I am doing an activity where I have a bottle of water; I will then drop some food coloring in it. After I stir it up, I will pour some bleach in the bottle as well. The water will then turn clear again. I will tell the class how forgiveness is like the "bottle with bleach" experiment.

  32. For my AR project I am reading The one by Kierra Cass. She is one of my favorite authors and im really excited to do a project for this book. For my AR project I wanted to do another art project because I love art, and I like to apply it to school work as much as possible. I haven't exactly figured out what to do, but it will be cool.

  35. For my AR project I will be making something that goes along with the story. I don't want to say what, so then I don't spoil it. I read Pillar of Fire by David G. Woolley, from the Promised Land series. There are 485 pages in the book. I loved this book, but it took some thought on what to do for it.

  36. For my AR project I am going to rewrite the ending of my book. My book was the third book in the Maze runner series. My book had horrible ending so I decided to rewrite it. My book was The Death Cure by James Dashner it has 325 pages in it.

  37. For my AR project I am going to do an art project. I am not sure what kind of art project but I am thinking along the lines of making a sculpture. My book is The scorch trials by James Dashner. It is the second book in the Maze runner series. My book has 368 pages in it.

  38. My book is "This Shattered World" By Meagan Spooner and Amie Kaufman. It is the second book in the Starbound trilogy, and both books have some of the most amazing covers I've ever seen. I plan on doing an alternate version of the cover, in the form of a drawing. My book is 390 pages.

  39. For my AR project I am going to make a children's book. My book is called "Unbroken". I think it will be challenging to make a children's book so that is why I am planning to take the challenge. It is more of a grown up book, but it will be an interesting children's book.

  40. For my AR project, I am reading two books but doing my project for "Boy 21." I will end up doing my project on the book "Boy 21." My brother read "Boy 21" last year and he told me he loved the book and that I should read it. I'm planning on doing an art project for my book.

  41. For this quarters AR project, I want to write a song. I think writing a song would be a different but exciting way to express the different emotions of my book. I might not be able to write a song, so my back up plan is to make a model of one of the scenes from my book.

  42. For my AR project, I decided to re-write the ending of the book. I didn't like the way the book ended, so I re-wrote it how I was hoping and wanted the book to end.

  43. For my AR project this quarter, I'm going to re-write the ending. My book is "Delirium"(which is a series) and I thought it would be cool to turn it into just one book and not a series. My book has 480 pages.

    ReplyDelete
  44. For this quarter's AR project, I'm going to rewrite the ending of "Cinder". This story is yet another twisted version of Cinderella. She is adopted by a scientist and he dies, so her guardian is now the evil step mother. My book has 390 pages, and so I began to read the second book of the series, "Scarlet".

  45. For my project this quarter I read Firefight, and for this book I wanted to go out of my comfort zone and do a poem. The poem is on the problem in the book. So far I have not done a poem for AR and hope it turns our well. I think that it will be fun and smart way to express this book.

    ReplyDelete
  46. For my project this quarter I read Cinder so I decided that I'm going to make banana bread for everyone to eat. The reason for this is because in the story there is a bakery across from Cinder's mechanic booth that plays a big role in the story. I just hope that the bread will turn out well.

  47. For my AR book, I read "The Five Kingdoms: Sky Raiders." It has 421 pages. For my project I am going to make a sky castle out of salt dough or cardboard. The reason that I have chose this is because in the book, the main character raids floating sky castles.

  48. The book I read for my AR book was The Lord Of The Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring. The project I chose to go with this book was a word collage. Which is where I put words on a fairly big sized piece of paper and I get the words from a magazine and such, and the words on the paper should describe the book and there should be 50 + words.
